Scotch ‘N Sirloin, Dewitt NY

Amazing steaks, great wait staff and as weird as it seems for a steak house, the nicest salad bar I’ve seen.

They have a small, well-defined menu that hasn’t changed much in the last 30 years. It consists of various steaks you would expect to find at a steak house, plus lobster tails, crab and whatever seasonal fish is available, in all the expected combinations (steak and lobster, steak and crab, etc.).

However, lets go back to the salad for a minute. . .

The salad bar has a nice assortment of mixed greens in a large bowl on ice, along with fresh Italian and Rye breads from a local bakery, a number of home made items like marinated mushrooms, marinated artichoke hearts and croutons and Catalina dressing, seasonal fresh items like radishes as well as the expected items like sliced onions. And it’s always clean and everything is always crisp and fresh.

The steaks are always perfect and perfectly cooked, but the hidden secret is one-line at the bottom of the third page of the menu where it says “Hamburger”. It’s actually a cheeseburger if you want it that way, and is a fresh, hand-made beefy explosion of burger-greatness that easily rates in my top 3 burgers, ever.

I know this sounds like heresy, but I can get a great steak in a lot of places. Not many can pull off a perfect burger.

Scotch ‘N Sirloin has great service, great food and they’re consistent. I’ve been eating there for decades, and have never had a bad meal or a bad waiter.
